COLOUR IS GOOD

Our palette is lovingly known as ‘drab’ yet sometimes we just cannot resist a splash of bold. Colour is elemental and the most direct route to self expression. Use it well for a better world.

WORKING CLOTH

Made for making – real utility cloths: duck canvas, oilskin and weighty denim can be sculpted into functional shape.

WOOL & TWEED

At Merchant & Mills, we know that the right cloth is paramount. Understanding how cloth behaves will lead you to the best choices for you and what you are making. Using traditional wool is very rewarding, thick or thin, fine or coarse: it loves to be hand stitched and is eminently sculptable for garments and home furnishings.

TRIMMINGS

Gros grain has never been so dapper – lovely sumptuous colours in widths from 17-70mm, it makes for greta bag handles and works well with canvas and denims. For the quieter eye, we have some super strong unbleached 100% cotton webbings for apron and bag making too.

THE BEAUTIFUL RAW MATERIAL

WOOL
We only stock best quality wool from coarse Harris tweeds to the finest suitings. Wool is the perfect dressmaker’s fabric, as it loves to be hand stitched, and loves to be used for handmade garments and soft furnishings.

COTTONS

Fantastic to work with – strong and even, easy to handle and sew, drapes well and is also an ideal fabric for beginners to hone their skills. From muslin to denim, brushed to cross-weave, there is a cotton cloth for every project. We are having a small love affair with our current denims including a weighty 12oz American and a hickory strip that’s full of character and ideal for aprons, bags and leisurely cushions.
LINEN

In return for great durability, strength and tautness, linen demands you enjoy and appreciate the slubs and irregularities in the threads and weave. A good wobble on linen can make the finish garment look great – there is nothing like the slept-in look to hint at pure, careless style . . . ‘this old thing?’
ORGANIC
We have sourced some really fabulous fair-trade and organic cottons including velevet and corduroy. Our wool was all once free range and grass fed too, often in the Great British outdoors.

COTTON ON

Cotton fabrics encompass denims, velvets, corduroy and good old mid weight cotton cloth. We lean towards classic weaves and love a bit of quality. They are predictable fabrics to work with and incredibly versatile from soft and friendly to neat and crisp.

The organic gingham is an ecological take on a familiar staple that can be put to work for jolly good fun.

NAP & PILE

CORDUROY AND VELVET

Our traditional corduroy and velvet are soft and cosy with comforting pile – for dressing yourself or your home.
