Current Vacancy – Online Assistant

The Role:

Merchant & Mills has a loyal worldwide following for its quality unique cloth. As the online assistant the website will be your baby; you’ll be in charge of writing and uploading all listings, visual merchandising the site for optimum sales and generally making it the best it can be. As well as uploading and maintaining content you’ll be working with the creative manager to upload content for the blog, Instagram and newsletters. You’ll need to be methodical and organised with a good knowledge of textiles and the sewing market.  It is not essential you have worked in a similar role as full training will be given, but you will need to demonstrate how other roles make you suitable for this role.

Our Spaces:

Our Winchelsea Rd depot in Rye is where our wholesale team operate from and where many deliveries are made. We also conduct all our photoshoots here.

Our Tower St shop in central Rye is currently where all our online orders dispatch from, as well as operating as a shop from Weds – Sun. Our classes will start up again next year; they operate on the mezzanine level at Tower St.

We have an office space in central Rye where key managers work, as well as our pattern development team. This is where you will be based working directly with the creative manager, however you will spend some time at each location within your role.

We are working towards a custom built warehouse on the edge of Rye where all departments (apart from the shop) will then come under one roof. You will be based here once this space is ready, approx. end of 2022.

Duties:

Product Listing Management

  • You will have access to edited images and all product information to create listings as per our guidelines. As well as including specific information you’ll need to be able to talk about the suitability of the cloths and products for certain projects.
  • Updating listings as needed; for example following dye batch changes, when new information needs adding etc.
  • Creating fabric sample folders for all new items and assigning matching thread codes.
  • Managing categories on the website. You’ll be sent through weekly visual merchandising tasks from our buyer, and will need to arrange the products within categories and on the website pages according to this guidance.
  • Briefing the shop team at Tower St with new product information so they can sell effectively.

Online Content

Working with the sourcing and creative team, you’ll be given content to promote. This could be through Instagram, our Blog, or newsletters.

  • Instagram: posting new content, adding to story highlights, and replying to comments on new posts.
  • Blog posts: these can be product related or could be articles on pattern hacks or interviews.
  • Newsletters: working within our own templates on mailchimp to put together separate newsletters for retail and wholesale customers.

Potential other duties:

  • All staff must be willing to step into a retail packing role if we are particularly busy or there are staff shortages due to illnesses or holiday.
  • Assisting the creative manager where needed.
  • Preparations for photoshoots.

Line Manager:

  • You will be working directly under the creative manager, Michelle.

Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • You must be able to work well under pressure and be able to prioritise effectively.
  • You will need to be organised and methodical.
  • You must be highly detail orientated as it’s essential that all listings follow our guidelines and nothing is missed.
  • You must have excellent copy writing skills and be able to write within the Merchant & Mills voice.
  • You must have a solid knowledge of fabric and fabric suitability for different types of garments.
  • A good knowledge of Photoshop.
  • A good working knowledge of Instagram.
  • A good knowledge of our patterns and the Merchant and Mills ethos. Ideally you will have made a selection of our patterns.

Desirable:

  • Experience in a similar role.
  • A good working knowledge of Lightroom.
  • Experience using Mailchimp.
  • Photography skills.
  • A keen interest in sustainability.

This is a full time position based in Rye, East Sussex.

Hours will be Monday – Friday 9.30 – 5.30.
