Vacancy – Part Time Marketing Assistant

Merchant & Mills, a market-leading retailer/wholesaler of fabric, haberdashery, and dressmaking patterns is looking for a driven Marketing Assistant to join our team. Reporting to our creative and buying team you’ll be responsible for driving sales to our retail and wholesale website. If you get excited by the prospect of new pattern and fabric releases and how you can best showcase them, then this is the job for you!

Salary / Rate: Dependent on experience
Contracted Hours:   22 hours per week (approximately, can be flexible)
Location: Remote or Rye Office.
Start date: We are ideally looking to fill this role by early September, but we can be flexible with timings for the right candidate.

Your duties will include:

  • Instagram: posting new content, adding to story highlights, replying to comments on new posts, direct messages, creating content for reels.
  • Blog posts: these can be product related or could be articles on pattern hacks or interviews.
  • Newsletters: working within our own templates on Mailchimp to put together separate newsletters for retail and wholesale customers. Monthly reporting to our General Manager on Mailchimp analytics.
  • Working from a calendar put together by our Buyer you’ll work with the Creative Manager to put together a marketing plan for the coming year. There will also be ad hoc additions in reaction to our weekly sales reports.
  • Writing press releases and creating and maintaining relationships with key media. Replying to press requests from magazines.
  • Working with our e commerce assistant you’ll be adding content and copy to the retail new website (in progress) and will be working on content for an upcoming new wholesale website. You will also be the holiday cover for our E-commerce Assistant, so this will involve uploading new products to the website.
  • You are the main point of contact for the development of our pattern envelopes, so you would liaise with our graphic designer about copy and design for these.
  • Proofing of pattern instructions and envelopes.

Essential Skills:

  • Proven record with e marketing and social media.
  • Creative thinker – although the visual identity is largely driven by our Creative Manager we very much want somebody with ideas that we can work with collaboratively.
  • An excellent knowledge of the sewing market and our competitors.
  • You must be an excellent communicator, your role will involve liaising with members of the team across our different locations on a daily basis.
  • A keen enthusiasm for sewing, fabrics and design.
  • Excellent copy writing skills and ability to write within our brand guidelines.
  • A clear understanding of the Merchant and Mills aesthetic and our customer.
  • Good working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Mailchimp and Outlook.

Desirable Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Lightroom and Illustrator.
  • Experience working with SEO to drive sales.
  • Graphic design skills for simple layouts. For example shop posters, adverts, and packaging design assistance.
  • A good level of sewing skills.
  • It is beneficial that you are familiar with our patterns so you can talk confidently about them in your copy.
