Description:

TN31 is a relaxed and versatile interpretation of the classic fishtail parka. Lined or unlined it can work for all seasons. It has side pockets, front welt pockets, a back vent and optional drawstring waist.

Size UK 6 - 18.

All seam allowances are 1.5cm unless otherwise stated.

Skill level - experienced.

Fabric suggestions - Dry Oilskin, Oilskin (lined version only), Tweed, Woollens, Cotton Drill, Cotton Canvas, Waterproofed Cottons and Linens. Using something like oilskin will ensure it keeps it structural shape, but we think it would look equally good in something more slinky like a Tencel Twill.

For the ribbing neckline, we have used rib that stretches by half again, i.e. 10cm piece stretches to 15cm. We used our plain rib which you can see by clicking onto alternative fabrics. You can also use a piece of our French striped ribbing for the neckline.

For the lining we would recommend using our Barrier Lining if you are making the oilskin version. We have it in Black or Tan. Other lining options; Brushed Cotton, Cotton Poplin, or a medium weight slip lining in viscose or acetate.

Paper vs PDF

If you order a paper copy you will be sent a printed version of our pattern. If you select PDF, you are purchasing a digital file which will be stored on your account to be downloaded at any time. PDF's will include a tiled, an A0 copy shop file and your instructions. The tiled file can be used on any home printer and stuck together and is compatible with both A4 and US letter paper. Alternatively, you can send off the copy shop file to be printed full size; we can usually recommend someone in your area. If you are in the UK, we would recommend The Fold Line. The instructions can either be printed at home or simply follow along on your computer or phone.

The planning stage of sewing can be just as fun as the actual making. I’ve often overwhelmed myself with all the possibilities of colours and fabrics! The Parka has a few elements to it, the outer fabric, lining fabric (if making the lined version), drawstring cord, ribbing for the neckline, and buttons. You can also add some extra hardware options like cord stops and cord locks.

It can be tricky ordering fabric online, especially trying to match your fabric to the rib. We’ve given you 10 options below to make things a bit easier. If we’ve not covered one of the fabrics you are thinking of using you can always email us for help with matching it up to the rib. Our Barrier Lining in Tan and Black is ideal for the Parka as it has a water repellent finish, giving you extra protection from the elements.
