Make the Ottoline

Availability: out-of-stock

Level – Advanced

The Ottoline is a boxy workwear jacket with cuff and side seam splits, patch pockets and an inside pocket. Although a lovely design detail the vents are a little tricky, so you can simplify Ottoline by excluding the side seam and sleeve vents if you like. You can choose to do contrasting top stitching or to use a colour that matches your cloth.

This is an advanced class so we ask that you are a competent sewer with a good amount of dressmaking experience under your belt.

What is included in your class:

  • The Ottoline pattern.
  • Lunch on all 3 days.
  • Machine thread and top stitch thread.
  • A Bernina sewing machine and overlocker. We ask that you don’t bring your own sewing machine please.
  • 10% discount in the Rye shop for the duration of your class.
  • Plentiful supply of tea/coffee and small snacks.
  • A Merchant & Mills notebook and pencil.
  • All relevant Merchant & Mills tools and notions.

Please note:

  • This class is limited to 6 students
  • We require you to cut out the paper pattern and your fabric prior to attending the course. After booking your place, we will contact you to discuss your fabric choice. You can then order your fabric in order to prepare it in time for the course, we will send the Ottoline pattern out to you. This will give you more sewing time in the class!
  • We are offering a payment plan for this class. If you would like more information about this please email

We recommend using 8 – 12.5oz non stretch denim, medium weight cotton drill or canvas, dry oilskin, linen and corduroy.

Please give yourself enough time to buy your cloth and get it pre washed and cut in order to bring it to the class ready to begin.

A note about pre washing denim:

Putting a large piece of medium-heavy weight denim into the washing machine can sometimes lead to white creases in the denim, this is because it is a stiff fabric so it doesn’t have room to move around. We recommend doing the following to help this not to happen:

  • Wash your denim on its own for the first wash. You don’t need to use detergent if you don’t want to.
  • Wet the fabric first before putting it into the drum.
  • If you can break up your denim fabric into half this will help.
  • Or if you have your pattern already you may be able to break it into smaller parts by looking at the lay plan – leave some wiggle room!
  • For the first wash use a delicate 30 degree cycle with a low spin.
  • If any white creases develop ironing whilst still damp will help.
  • Do not tumble dry.
