FINDING OUR HOLE & CORNER
This Summer Merchant & Mills de camped to the beautiful Cornish countryside to be part of the Hole & Corner tent at Port Eliot festival. If you haven’t been before, I can only say that it is one of the most beautiful festival experiences you can have. Full of very nice people, very nice food and even better surroundings.
Hole and Corner magazine brought together a curated group of makers to run workshops. Demand was high, and there were queues out the door! Unfortunately after 20 years of sunshine Port Eliot saw it’s first rainy festival, but come rain; I shine! With a hot chocolate and my oilskin Landgate everything was in place for a great time.
From somebody who has been to their fair share of festivals, I knew instantly what I wanted to make. A child of the 80’s, I was never without my bum bag. Although not traditionally a thing of beauty – you can fit everything you need in there, meaning hands free for dancing, drinking and generally having a merry festival time! We took our classic British Oilskin and designed an updated version of the bum bag with leather straps and nickel hardware. We kept the construction simple so it was achievable in a couple of hours for a beginner. The workshops were a flurry of sewing machine hums, wielding hammers, and great vibes from the Amateurism DJ’s. Everyday we had a new team of sewers making our time fly by, eager, exuberant and always with a big smile.
Thank you to Hole and Corner for including us in your special tent and to Alma Haser and Jazmine Miles Long for being the best workshop assistants. Roll on summer 2018!
If you would like to make your own Field Belt we will be releasing some kits in the next month which will include the pattern, fabric, leather and hardware.
Fingers crossed we see you in a Cornish field next summer!
