Description:

Come to the East Sussex countryside and delve into the world of natural dyeing with Sasha Zotova from ‘Amongst’ (@_amongst_). Using local plants, flowers and vegetables you’ll learn how to create dyes, prepare fabrics effectively for dyeing and use your dyed fabrics to create some small patchwork samplers.

The Itinerary -

Mon 10th June

Check in at the Grove from 3pm. At 4pm there will be a meet and great with Sasha and Carolyn with drinks and nibbles, where we will introduce you to the house and you’ll get to know each other a bit better.

Tuesday 11th June

You’ll meet Sasha at her barn in the countryside outside Rye to begin your dyeing journey. Showing fabrics, tools, plants and dyed examples Sasha will give an introduction to the world of natural dyeing and what’s possible. She’ll discuss different types of fabrics and how they need to be prepared for dye. Tea and cake is on hand throughout the talk.

Sasha will then lead a foraging trip out into the surrounding woods and fields near the barn to gather relevant plants and materials to dye with.

Return to the barn for lunch and tea.

You’ll then begin to prepare your dyes in the dye pot. As this dye is left to mature in the pot, you’ll dye some cloth with some premade natural dyes made by Sasha. This will be hung up on the washing line and left overnight.

Wednesday 12th June

Back at the barn you’ll heat up your dye pots that have been left overnight, placing your chosen fabrics in to dye. These will be left in the pot all day to mature.

Over tea and coffee Sasha will talk about bundle dyeing, eco printing and flower bashing. You’ll then head out to forage materials for bundle dyeing.

Ahead of lunch you’ll begin your bundle dyeing with your foraged materials. These fabrics will all then be hung out to dry.

In the afternoon it’s time to start flower bashing! Flower bashing is a traditional Japanese technique where you pound flowers on cloth or paper to create a natural print

Thursday 13th June

Rest day! A group trip to Great Dixter. Great Dixter is an historic house, a garden, a centre of education, and a place of pilgrimage for horticulturists from across the world. We are so lucky to have this inspirational garden and house on our doorstep.

You can use the rest of the day as you please, a leisurely afternoon at the shop, or out and about in Rye or the local area. We can give suggestions of areas of interest.

Friday 14th June

Gathering all of your natural dyed fabrics you’ll take them to the sewing space above our shop for a relaxing day of sewing. Hannah from 'O Moon' and head of pattern development here at M&M will teach you to make a traditional log cabin square or sawtooth design. This can be done by hand or machine.

How much sewing you get done on this day will be dependent on your sewing level, you could create several patchwork pieces with view to starting a larger quilt or you may prefer to concentrate on just the one. Lunch, tea and cake is included.

In the evening you’ll head out for a farewell supper with Sasha, Hannah and your fellow students to toast all your hard work!

Sunday 15th June

You have Saturday to either relax at the Grove or go out and about in Rye. Check out by 10am on the Sunday.

There are 6 rooms at The Grove and accommodation is included. Rooms are single occupancy.

What is included in your retreat fee:

  • 6 night stay at The Grove, in the heart of Rye (Monday night to Saturday night inclusive). This is a 2 minute walk from the shop.
  • Breakfast goodies supplied.
  • 10% off all purchases in the shop (on all days you are here)
  • 6 x 0.5 x 0.5M pieces to dye with. These will be prepared for dye for Sasha for your arrival. If you want any additional fabrics for your course we will ask you by email and they will have to be scoured by Sasha. These will be charged for in the shop at the end of the retreat.

The Studio:

The studio is on the mezzanine above the shop, so we have all fabric and notions on hand. You will be using an array of Merchant & Mills tools. We have Bernina sewing machines and two overlockers. Everything you'll need is here, there's no need to bring your own kit!

Each student has ample space in which to cut out and work in, with plentiful natural light.

Accessibility:

Our studio is currently only available via stairs. We are always thinking of ways in which we can improve accessibility for the future.

Dogs and service dogs:

As a dog friendly workplace, please be aware that we have a few well-behaved dogs on site most days.

We cannot accommodate dogs on the retreats or classes however, registered service dogs are welcome, please let us know at the time of booking if you will be bringing your service dog.
