Description:

A two day class learning how to draft a pattern so you can recreate your favourite piece of clothing with Timothy O’Sullivan.

In this introductory workshop you will discover techniques used in the fashion industry to copy and create sewing patterns from an existing garment without the need to deconstruct it.

Timothy O’Sullivan is a Senior Lecturer in Pattern Cutting at Ravensbourne University, London who shares his passion for exploring drape and cutting techniques via his Instagram account @mr_o_pattern_studio.

His past work as a Creative Pattern Cutter has featured in British and Italian Vogue, on the Oscars Red Carpet and the catwalks of London, Milan, and New York. He is also a regular contributor to The Design Museum, London and The Turner Contemporary, Margate creating fashion focused workshops.

Over the two days Tim will introduce you to methods for drafting and fabric tracing, as well as essential pattern cutting techniques for professional sewing patterns. You will have the opportunity to explore these techniques on your own garment with expert tutorial guidance.

The course is suitable for all levels however some knowledge of sewing and using patterns would be beneficial.

Day one: analysis and exploration

• Analysing your garment to understand its cut and construction.

• Different methods of tracing a garment and choosing the most appropriate

technique for you.

• Drafting and essential pattern cutting techniques.

• Understanding the grain line and balance points.

Day two: development and refinement

• Tracing off from your draft to create individual sewing pattern pieces.

• Methods for creating a simple toile to test fit and proportions.

• Fit analysis and pattern alterations to create a professional sewing pattern ready to make in your favourite fabric.

The studio day is from 10am till 5pm.

You will need:

Please bring along a favourite garment you would like to recreate for your own personal use. Do choose something relatively simple to help you get started and remember to think about your sewing level – would you confidently be able to put together this garment without thorough written pattern instructions? You will be making a toile and Tim will talk through the process for each garment and help you to create a construction guide and make notes so you can recreate the garment at home.

What is included in your class:

  • 10% off all purchases in the shop.
  • A beautiful seasonal lunch on both days.
  • Plentiful supply of tea/coffee and cake.
  • All relevant tools and notions.

Please note that this is a non-residential course so accomodation is not included.

The Studio:

The studio is on the mezzanine above the shop, so we have all fabric and notions on hand. You will be using an array of Merchant & Mills tools. We have Bernina sewing machines and two overlockers. Everything you'll need is here, there's no need to bring your own kit!

Each student has ample space in which to cut out and work in, with plentiful natural light.

Accessibility:

Our studio is currently only available via stairs. We are always thinking of ways in which we can improve accessibility for the future.

Dogs and service dogs:

As a dog friendly workplace, please be aware that we have a few well-behaved dogs on site most days.

We cannot accommodate dogs on the retreats or classes however, registered service dogs are welcome, please let us know at the time of booking if you will be bringing your service dog.

Terms & Conditions:

Our courses are non-refundable unless we have a reserve list and we can fill your space.

In the unlikely event that we have to cancel a class we will offer a transfer to a new date or a full refund.
