CLOTH PICKS – THE ETTA

From left to right | Dew Block | Hemp/Organic Cotton Structure | Ava Check

The perfect summer dress is here! The Etta is an intermediate wrap dress pattern, featuring two inseam pockets and three options for sleeves (three-quarter length, short sleeve, or sleeveless). The bodice can be either double layered or faced.

The pattern can be made up in light to medium weight wovens, including  linen, brushed cotton, cotton poplin, Tencel, Indian handlooms, and more. The cloth you ultimately choose will dictate the overall look & feel of the dress – for instance a lightweight linen will have a casual drape, while our Hemp/Organic Cotton cloth will give the garment more structure.

The Etta wrap dress pattern can be found here in sizes UK 6-28.

Finnhamn is a soft, laundered linen/cotton blend with a classic navy and white skinny stripe. At 5.5oz/185gsm, the mid-weight cloth would work well for The Etta.

Tencel Denim is a great alternative to cotton chambrays. It’s a wonderfully versatile cloth that has a soft fluid drape and a slight sheen which would make for a luxurious Etta.

Atelier Blue features a gingham of natural and cobalt blue. It’s a great option if you’re looking for something a little bolder.

Dora is a European laundered linen with a fine pink check on a calming green background. At 5oz, it’s the perfect weight for an all-year-round wrap dress.

Dear Daisy is a perfect natural shade with a mid-brown check. It’s such a lovely colour that would be great for a sludgy Etta.

Portland is a soft, lightweight Indian cotton that is perfect for dresses that are lined or have some fullness, like The Etta. A great choice for a dress to wear in warmer weather.

185 Linen is our go-to dressmaking fabric and just so happens to be the perfect weight for this dress. This is Cinnamon Dust, a deep burnt sienna shade.

Tencel/Linen is a Linen and Tencel mix. While Tencel is a very drapey fibre, the linen gives it a slight slubby texture. A great choice for something a little more elevated!

Indigo Snow is a beautiful summer weight dressmaking cotton. The Indigo blue and white ikat weave is made using traditional resist dyeing techniques.

Rose Soft Poplin is a fine crisp cotton that’s incredibly soft and has a beautiful texture. At 3oz/118gsm, the cloth is a perfect dusty pink colour.

Tencel Gingham Sky would make for the perfect summer wrap dress. At nearly 5oz and 167gsm, the tencel has a soft fluid drape with a unique texture to it.

Avenue (Jamandi) is a fine muslin cotton with geometric motifs. The cloth softens up beautifully once it’s washed, and has a great slub and texture to it.

Yarn Dyed Hemp/Tencel is a lightweight mid-blue chambray in a blend of hemp and tencel. The cloth would make a beautiful floaty Etta dress.

Hemp/Organic Cotton was used to sew up one of our samples, and it worked beautifully. Just the right amount of structure!

Organic Cotton Voile Payton is lightweight with a gently drape. When making the Etta, we’d recommend doubling up the voile as it will be quite sheer as one layer.
