When did you learn to sew?
I learnt to machine sew during my textiles a-level at around 16 years old but before that as a child my Nan taught me to hand sew and cross stitch with her.
What is your role at M + M?
I am a full time retail assistant in the Tower street shop, helping customers pick out fabrics as start their projects, but also cutting, packing and posting out the online orders.
Does sustainability play a part in why and how you sew?
Yes definitely, last year I had a huge clear out of my wardrobe and made the decision to buy less, with the aim of creating a smaller more refined collection of things I love but I also wanted to make more of my own clothes, using sustainable ethically sourced fabrics whilst learning new skills. I have so much more appreciation for the garments I have made knowing all of the work and time it has taken me to create.
Where do you look for inspiration for your dressmaking?
I find inspiration from following lots of makers and artists on Instagram, from my colleagues and customer’s projects and being surrounded by so many amazing fabrics all day.
I love bold colour, a mix of contemporary and classic shapes. I always love the designs of Roksanda Illincic – classic, elegant and feminine silhouettes juxtaposed by injections of block colours, playful proportions and prints.
If you had all the money in the world where would you shop for your clothes?
I would like to be able to buy from designers who choose quality over quantity and focus on producing purposeful sustainable and ethically made garments. For example Bug Clothing, Ottowin footwear and Looph.
What is your favourite part of sewing?
First and foremost learning new skills and tricks each time I sew. But also the moment in the process when pieces start to faintly resemble a garment, say after finishing the side seams or setting in sleeves.
What is your favourite cloth in the shop at the moment?
That is hard one – but a couple I really like at the moment are:
Jaffa a new Indian cotton with a delicate orange and dark grey check.
Hemp organic cotton denim (definitely thinking about a pair of Eve trousers for the summer.)
What is your favourite M + M pattern and why?
Ellis / Trapeze. I recently made the Ellis on a course – I love the length, delicate dart detail and rouleaux loop. And the Trapeze because of it’s sheer versatility and classic clean lines.
Do you have any other creative hobbies apart from sewing?
Since university I have been practicing printmaking, but more recently I love learning to grow flowers each year on my small allotment plot. I am a trained florist and it is amazing to have home grown British flowers to play with.
What’s next on the to sew list?!
Another Ellis in Spot Check linen. I’d also really like to make the Heron wrap top from the Workbook. Maybe in one of the new Indian cottons we’ve had in, I really like Interference and Terra Nutmeg. I think it’ll be such a great and versatile addition to my spring/summer wardrobe.
