Description:

All dates for 2025 are now sold out, if you would like to sign up to our waiting list you can do so here.

We are thrilled to invite Julius from House of Quinn to Merchant & Mills for a modern quilting sewing retreat. Julius’s approach to quilting is an organic and informal process that allows you to explore and create freely with textiles, embracing a relaxed and unconstrained approach to quilting that enables you to create a quilt that is personal to you.

During the workshop retreat, you will learn some improv patchwork and appliqué techniques that you can combine and experiment with under Julius's guidance. You will learn how to create a quilt from start to finish, from making your quilt top, layering it ready for quilting, quilting your work, making binding, and also how to finish your quilt, transforming it into a quilted object that can be used around the home or hung on the wall. Your quilt will be 140 x 140cm (or smaller if you prefer).

This workshop is suitable for all skill levels and is designed to allow you to get creative with fabrics. You can pick and choose from the techniques that Julius will show you as well as have the opportunity to work with hand and machine stitching when making your work. Please note the machine stitching will be for the patchwork for the front of your quilt, when it comes to quilting you’ll be using hand stitching. Sometimes the simplest approach is the most effective.

Author of Modern Quilting, Julius is a textile designer and artist who founded his creative practice 'House of Quinn' in 2016.

A place for exploration, House of Quinn represents a way of making and design that embraces traditional techniques and fundamental making practices to cultivate contemporary design narratives onto familiar objects.

Julius has an MDES in Fashion Design and Business and a background in textile & 3D design. Graduating from Brighton University in 2010. He has shown work in Japan and London, working with the likes of Toast, The New Craftsmen and M.A.H Gallery as well as curating textiles exhibitions and teaching workshops around the country.

There are 6 places on this retreat, accommodation is included. Rooms are single occupancy and for the student only.
