SIGN UP TO WAITLIST

Hattie Eavis works as a decorative artist for domestic interiors based in East Sussex. It’s not always easy to find beautiful lampshades, so come with your own favourite fabric and let Hattie teach you how to make your own. This is not a sewing class, so it’s ideal if you love our fabrics but want to make something for the home that doesn’t involve a sewing machine!

Timings – 10– 5 (breaking one hour for lunch).

Skill level – Beginner (there is no sewing involved in this class).

What is included:

  • All materials are included in the course fee, apart from fabric.
  • 10% off all purchases in the shop.
  • All tools you’ll need for the day will be provided.
  • Plentiful supply of tea/coffee and cake.

Lunch is not included. Rye has a plentiful array of cafes to sit in or places to buy take away food. We have a large kitchen table where you can bring things back to eat or bring your own.

You will need:

Fabric for your lampshade. Hattie recommends using fine cottons for the lampshades, as this allows the light to shine through nicely. Our Indian cottons are an ideal weight, you can browse them here. Because you don’t need to pretreat your fabric for the lampshade it is fine to arrive a little earlier to pick out your cloth downstairs. Or bring something with you – if you are unsure about its suitability then do email us before hand and we can check and advise.

You will need 150cm long by 25cm wide. As Indian cottons are usually narrow at about 110cm, you will need to buy 150cm’s. If for example you are using a cloth that is wider at 150cm’s then you’d only need to buy 25cm’s.

Hattie is offering customers a 10% discount on her wooden lamp bases that are hand-turned in Sussex. The prices are as follows (10% has been taken off the price)

Charleston lamp  - £175.50

Classic lamp  - £166.50

Baby lamp - £157.50

Please let us know before hand if you would like a lamp base as it will have to be made for you.

The exact lampshade size will be; bottom diameter 33cm, top diameter 8cm and height (slope) 19cm. They attach to a frame which has a candle clip, which is designed for a candle clip bulb (LED recommended).

The Studio

The studio is on the mezzanine above the shop, so we have all fabric and notions on hand.

Each student has ample space in which to cut out and work in, with plentiful natural light.

Accessibility:

Our studio is currently only available via stairs. We are always thinking of ways in which we can improve accessibility for the future.

Dogs and service dogs:

As a dog friendly workplace, please be aware that we have a few well-behaved dogs on site most days.

We cannot accommodate dogs on the retreats or classes however, registered service dogs are welcome, please let us know at the time of booking if you will be bringing your service dog.
