The Paynter - A Patch Pocket Hack

The two-way access bellow hip pockets on the Paynter jacket are a stand out feature, but also one of the trickier elements of the project. We have put together a video to walk you through the bellow pocket construction here. The bellow pockets have 9 layers of cloth; so if your cloth is on the heavier side you may wish to avoid this feature. This patch pocket is also an easier sew for sure! You can switch it up for a simpler style patch pocket version by following these instructions:

  • Do not cut piece 8 (Hip pocket). Instead cut one pair of patch pockets – dimensions: 20.5cm wide x 24.5cm long. This includes 1.5cm seam allowance all round and an extra turn of 3cm at the top.
  • Follow the instructions until step 3. Then ignore steps 4-21.
  • To sew the new patch hip pocket, follow the step 22 (as for the Breast pockets), but when turning down the top edge (third illustration of step 22) use a 3 cm turn after the initial 1.5cm.
  • Follow step 23 to attach the new style hip pocket, but placing it in the position for the Hip pocket.
  • Continue to make and attach the Pocket flaps as per instructions.
