Description:

European laundered linen cotton blend, tumbled at the mill for softness in a yellow and brown check. This fabric is yarn dyed, meaning the yarns are dyed before being woven.

This cloth is produced in small batches in Eastern Europe where there is a strong heritage of spinning and weaving linen fabric.

Walton Check is a dual-purpose cloth. You can use it for clothing like dresses or slouchy jackets, but we have also used it for homeware projects. The gingham design lends itself well to tablecloths, napkins, tea towels and cushions. The cotton content gives in more stability than our 100% linen cloths. Our House book has great sewing ideas for around the home.

  • 6.7oz, 229gsm.
  • 52% linen, 48% cotton.
  • Square size 1.3cm
  • Wash at 30 degrees with a non bio detergent. Do not tumble. Shake out and dry flat. Linen will always seize up after washing but as soon as you start to use/wear it the fibres relax again.
  • If you are using this linen for curtains we recommend using a lining to prevent fading.
  • Never dry linen in direct sunlight as the colour can bleach and fade.
  • Made using AZO-free dyes.
  • As all computer monitors show colours differently, we recommend ordering a sample of the cloth to check it is the right colour and weight for your project.

More about this cloth

Linen is naturally stain resistant, does not pile, and is moth repellent. It is easy to wash as it can sustain high temperatures, is has very little if no shrinkage and is very strong.

It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, hypo allergenic and thermoregulating, it will also absorb up 20% moisture before feeling damp.

As the linen fibres have low elasticity (which causes it to crease) it will wear in any areas that are repeatedly folded in the same place for a long time, however it does have much better abrasion resistance than say cotton.

Eco credentials

Flax is a strong plant best grown in northern Europe. It needs little or no fertilisers and due to the local climate, little extra water. It doesn’t really require many pesticides either as it can grow in poor quality soil. The Advisory Commission Report to the European Parliament stated that flax cultivation has positive effects on eco-system diversity as it allows for an “environmental pause”. One hectare of flax can retain 3.7 tonnes of CO2. Every part of the plant is used, what isn’t used to produce linen can be used to make linseed oil, paper, cattle feed or even soap.

Linen is therefore almost naturally organic. It is completely biodegradable, recyclable and due to its natural absorbency, it requires less dye than cotton. Linen therefore scores high on the ecological chart.

The Hattie Top
The Hattie Top

If you leave the skirt off our Hattie Dress pattern you’re left with a neat little summer top. It’s a simple shape but with some lovely little details: the darts around the neckline and keyhole closure. It's also fully lined. The Hattie top, like the original dress, will work beautifully in a range of fabrics: linens, handloom cotton or light denim chambray. A soft Voile, or similar lightweight cotton, is best for the lining.

We made the following adjustments to The Hattie pattern to make this top:

The outer front/back bodice pieces were lengthened using the lengthen/shorten lines by 4cm. The lining remains the same length as the original pattern piece and is hemmed and hangs loose inside the top. As the lining is loose, its preferable to overlock the seams of the outer bodice for a neat finish.

Fabric requirements:

Self:

120cm wide fabric: 8-10 1.3M (1 ½ yards), 12-14 1.4M (1 ½ yards), 16-18 1.5M (1 ¾ yards) 

140-150cm wide fabric: 8-14 1M (1 ¼ yards), 16-18 1.3M (1 ½ yards)

Lining: Fabric requirements stay the same as original.
