Our handwoven Patchwork Brown fabric is a truly unique textile. Crafted with hand-patchworked cloth, no two metres are the same. This fabric has been made with a focus on sustainability, social justice, and economic stability for both the farmers and weavers.
This natural cotton fabric is the result of a collaboration between local farmers and a public trust created in 2018. The trust works hand in hand with the farmers, prioritising their livelihoods and encouraging chemical free cultivation practices that boost soil health, reduce groundwater contamination, and preserve bio-cultural diversity. This approach strengthens local ecosystems, allowing them to withstand the challenges of climate change while contributing to global environmental conservation.
The result is a unique cloth, woven from rain-fed, naturally brown cotton, which is both pest and drought-resistant. The resilience of this cotton makes crop failure virtually unheard of, significantly reducing risks for farmers. So far we have supported almost 5 acres/20,234 square meters of farm land.
By utilising the natural brown colour of the cotton, there is no need for water-intensive chemical dyeing. As a result, it is among the most sustainably produced cotton in the world. From 200kgs of seed cotton harvested only 45kgs can be used as yarn to weave the cloth. From every kilogram of yarn produced, six meters of fabric can be woven. Once the natural brown colour cotton is spun and woven, it’s separated into two piles based on colour tones, and another pile of naturally dyed stripes and checks. Natural dyes such as Indigo, Kasimi, Wedelia, Manjishta, Areca Nut and Pomegranate peels are used to create unique colours and tones.
The undyed and naturally dyed pieces are then stitched together by women in their homes, creating a distinctive patchworked fabric and viable commercial work for local artisans that honours traditional and local practices.
With beautifully finished seams on the reverse, this fabric is ready to be transformed into one-off interior pieces or clothes. It’s perfect for sewing interior projects. We’d try our Quilt and Sofa/Bed Topper or a pair of large cushions. For a beginner-friendly sewing project this fabric would make a wonderful Mathilde skirt, a simple sewing pattern that is perfect for showcasing unique cloth.
